How does Illumiroom work

Remarkably, as we can see in the video,  it uses Kinect and projector to scan and replicate the image of our living room, including the walls and the furniture and superimpose several 3D effects and augmented imaging on our living room.

First of all, it scans the room and detects the various color saturation, geometry of the room. Instead of just projecting the image, it actually augments your room and turns it into a virtual gamefield. It has several working styles, which include extending edges, Focus, special effects e.t.c

Focus gaming style only projects a few special high contrast effects such as explosions, blood splats, gun flares e.t.c. While extending edges, just projects the extended game environment on the walls.

Illumiroom Limitations

You can’t expect this 22nd century technology without any limitations.

• Games have to be specifically designed to provide the additional, immersible effects, to be compatible with Microsoft Illumiroom.


• For a few games, it needs access the to source code, which is not possible for majority of the games.


• It practically doesn’t work while having the lights in your room on, You need to make your living room dark for perfect illumination.


• It is still a prototype and is a long way from it’s commercial release.


• It isn’t compatible with every digital projector.

So you might be wondering when it is going to be released, Microsoft has officially revealed that, this technology isn’t going to be included in the next Xbox release. However, to our estimations, it is going to be added to the subsequent XBox release.
